17% growth of saffron cultivation area in West Azerbaijan
The head of the West Azerbaijan Agricultural Jihad Organization announced the forecast of harvesting 72 kg of saffron from the province’s farms.
Rasoul Jalili, referring to the forecast of harvesting 72 kg of saffron from the fields under cultivation of this crop in the province, added: saffron cultivation was done in 48 hectares last year, which is expected to increase by 17% this year by eight hectares.
He said that the cultivation of this crop is from early September to the first decade of October, he said: saffron cultivation is the best option to get rid of water shortage and profitable for farmers in the region and saffron cultivation in areas that are unimpeded by researchers at the Agricultural Research Center and Natural Resources Has been announced.
Jalili said: The growing season of saffron plant is in autumn and winter and the main water needs of saffron plant are met by rain and snow. Also, unlike many agricultural products, it does not need irrigation in summer and is a strategic plant to get rid of water shortage crisis. goes.
He added: the area under cultivation of this crop in the province has reached about 56 hectares and its yield has increased by an average of 2 kg per hectare.
The head of the West Azerbaijan Agricultural Jihad Organization said: Due to the low need of this plant for water and irrigation during the summer, the development of cultivation of this crop in the province has begun and is increasing.
Jalili continued: Last year, about 70 kg of saffron was harvested from the fields under cultivation of this product, and the cities of Urmia, Naghadeh, Miandoab, Shut, Piranshahr and Salmas have the highest area under cultivation of this product in the province.
He continued by stating that saffron onions are offered every year by private companies that are active in this field at the time of cultivation: Applicants who cultivate saffron on a large scale are introduced to South Khorasan province to prepare onions.
