20 tons of dried saffron was produced at the end of the saffron harvest season in Bakhrez city of Khorasan Razavi province, which has decreased by 10% compared to last year.
The director of Jihad Keshavarzi of Bakhrez city said: Lack of attention to saffron farms, increase of production costs and non-implementation of expert instructions of Jihad Keshavarzi consultants has reduced the yield of this product in this city during the current crop year.
Mohammad Dostkhah Ahmadi added: This year, the area under saffron cultivation in Bakhrez increased by 500 hectares to 4,500 hectares, which was 12% more than last year.
He continued: This year, the yield of dried saffron in Bakhrez fields reached more than four and a half kilograms per hectare, and a total of more than 20 tons of dried saffron was harvested in this city.
The director of Jihad Keshavarzi Bakhrez said: saffron cultivation in this city is scattered, however, for each hectare of cultivation of this crop, 60 people are working in this area from the planting to harvesting day.
Dostkhah added: Saffron cultivation has been welcomed by farmers due to less need for water, and therefore the supply of chemical fertilizers and micronutrients required, the use of modern irrigation methods, weed control, prevention of livestock grazing in farms and Technical tips and advice are provided to support saffron growers.
He also announced the production of a healthy product in 70% of the saffron farms in this city and said: the harvest of this product starts every year from the middle of October and continues until the end of November.
The director of Jihad Keshavarzi Bakhrez said: in the current crop year, new irrigation methods were implemented in 30% of the fields of this crop in this city.
Dostkhah added: In the current crop year, at the same time with the saffron harvest season in Bakhrez, five markets for buying and selling saffron flowers were set up in this city.
