65% of the world’s saffron is produced in Iran

Saffron, as the most expensive agricultural and pharmaceutical product in the world,
has a special place among Iran’s industrial and export products, and currently Iran is the largest exporter of saffron in the world.

Dr. Abdullah Malafilabi, Secretary of the International Saffron Conference, stated:
Currently, saffron provides a major part of the income of about 85,000 families in the southern and central cities of Khorasan. It will happen.

Last year, 160 tons of saffron were exported to different countries in Iran, he said.

He continued:
Saffron has a wide range of applications and is used in food, pharmaceutical, perfumery,
cosmetics and textile industries and its production of 30 tons from cultivation in 6,850 hectares of land in 1388 to 137 thousand tons of saffron
from cultivation It has reached 43,408 hectares of land in the 2002 crop year, which shows the importance of this crop.

Although Spain does not have a large share in production, it distributes 300 to 500 kilograms of saffron annually,
said Malafiabi, noting that the saffron market is now in Spanish hands.
Spain controls the world saffron market by buying Iranian saffron and packing it and helping other EU members.

He added:
If Iran wants to have a better position in the global saffron market,
it must export its products based on customer demand, for example,
some countries want saffron flowers and others want saffron powder, so saffron marketing must be in line with customer demands. Let it happen.
