9 hectares of Meybod farms were planted with saffron
The director of Jihad Keshavarzi of Meybod city announced the allocation of 9 hectares of farms in this city to saffron cultivation.
Sadr Pourkousari, stating that saffron is a less water-loving plant, said: in order to develop the area under cultivation of water-loving plants, 9 hectares of land in Meybod city has been allocated for saffron plant cultivation.
He called this product a suitable alternative for water-loving plants such as alfalfa, watermelon, melon and other weeds in Meybod city and said:Fortunately, Sadrabad Nodoshan region in this city has more suitable climatic conditions for saffron cultivation.
According to this official, six hectares of cultivated lands of this product are in Sadrabad Nodooshan section and fortunately, it has a high quality product.
Purkousari stated: Saffron plant is a five-year-old and water-scarce plant that its fruiting peak begins in the third year and needs to be irrigated only two to three times a year, and manpower is needed only at harvest time.
He also pointed out: the planting time of this product is September to early October and the harvest time is the first half of November.
The director of Meybod Agricultural Jihad said that the suitable weather conditions of Sadrabad Nodooshan caused the expansion of cultivation of this plant in the region and said: considering the favorable weather conditions, this year’s harvest is expected to be higher than last year.
In the end, Porkousari pointed to some problems of farmers in this section in Meybod city, including a 30% increase in the price of saffron onions compared to last year and the problems of importing it from other cities such as quarantine and health issues of saffron onions, as well as agricultural retailers in Meybod. He mentioned the existence of intermediaries and brokers.
