The head of the Khorasan Razavi Saffron Exporters Union said: Currently, saffron is cultivated without any planning and control and if this trend continues, we will face a surplus of production of this product in the near future.
Gholamreza Miri stated that saffron is currently cultivated in 22 provinces of Iran, adding: This product is cultivated even in provinces that have enough water by providing special facilities, which will be problematic in the long run.
Referring to the comprehensive saffron cultivation program, he said: In this program, the harvest of this product will increase about three times per unit area, and yet there will be no need to increase the area under cultivation. It should be taken into account that the needs of different countries for saffron have a certain ceiling, and if our production exceeds the market needs, we will face a production surplus.
