Beginning of saffron harvest from 87 hectares in Qazvin province
Horticulture director of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Qazvin province said: saffron harvest has started in 87 hectares of agricultural farms in the province.
Ali Akbari added: this amount of cultivated area is 13 and a half hectares as infertile seedlings and 73 and a half hectares as fertile.
He estimated the average yield of this crop at three kilograms per hectare and said: According to forecasts, more than 220 kilograms of saffron will be produced from this amount under cultivation.
Akbari added: Saffron is a subtropical plant that grows well in mild winters and hot and dry summers.
He said: in Qazvin province, the development of saffron, which has desirable quantitative and qualitative effects, has been done well and can be developed in other areas of the province, including Qazvin, Takestan, Abik and Buin Zahra.
Horticulture director of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Qazvin province added: Saffron activity starts in October and flowers from November to mid-December.
Akbari stated: Saffron is used in dyeing, pharmaceutical, traditional medicine, food, confectionery, ice cream, distillates, essential oils, perfumery and cosmetics industries.
He reminded: This product is used as a food and syrup flavoring, sedative, antispasmodic, appetizing, stomach tonic, treatment of abdominal pain and asthma and is considered as a stimulant in the world.
