Cultivation of 10 hectares of saffron in Qom province
The head of the province’s agricultural jihad organization announced the cultivation of 10 hectares of saffron in Qom province.
Mohammad Reza Talaei added: Saffron is one of the medicinal plants that needs very little water and because of this need for water shortage in the program to change the cultivation pattern of the province, is part of the cultivation row, which can be a good alternative to water-rich crops.
Referring to the fact that we have about 10 hectares of saffron cultivation in Qom province, he said: At present, the average saffron harvest in Qom province is 2 kg per hectare, which has a very high economic value.
By developing this crop, especially in mountainous areas, we try to provide conditions so that all members of the farmer family can participate in the process of planting, holding and harvesting saffron, thereby reducing labor costs and increasing farmers’ incomes.
He pointed out that saffron harvest in Qom province has increased more than 2.5 times, noting that last year saffron harvest in Qom province was less than 3 kg, this year this amount has reached 8 kg.
The head of the Jihad Agricultural Organization of the province said: the limitations of water resources in Qom province require us to take steps to cultivate low-water crops, and to maintain the farmer’s capital and its continuity and stability, we must replace water-rich crops with saffron. 30% of the lands of Qom province are capable of cultivating saffron.
Currently, saffron cultivation in Qom province is being done on a trial basis and in the coming years, the area under cultivation of this crop will increase.
He described the quality of saffron product in Qom province as desirable and said: considering that in Khorasan province, which is the center of saffron production in the country and farmers have many years of experience in this regard, but the quality of saffron product in Qom province is also very desirable.
In Qom province, we should try to have the best performance per unit area in the field of saffron harvest so that we can make the cultivation of this crop economical and take steps to increase farmers’ incomes.
