Cultivation of saffron in 42 hectares of lands in Kurdistan province
Zahed Hajimirzaei, director of horticulture affairs of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Kurdistan Province, said:
Development of saffron cultivation in Kurdistan is one of the most important programs of Jihad Keshavarzi
to increase farmers’ incomes in low-yield lands. And there is Sarvabad.
He added:
Saffron cultivation has started in Kurdistan a few years ago and the number of saffron farmers in the province is increasing every year.
Hajimirzaei pointed out:
Currently, 60 farmers are cultivating saffron in Kurdistan province.
42.5 hectares of the province’s lands have been allocated to saffron cultivation this year, of which 23 hectares are fertile and 19 hectares are infertile.
The official said:
the highest area of saffron cultivation in this province is in Dehgolan city with 8 hectares and Bijar
with 7 hectares and Sarvabad with more than 6 hectares are in the next categories of saffron cultivation.
He reminded:
Considering the situation of saffron cultivation, our forecast is to harvest 22 kg of saffron in the current crop year in the province
Hajimirzaei added:
Currently, most saffron growers in Kurdistan province are going through the initial years of production,
considering that saffron enters the process of exploitation and income generation from the third year onwards,
so the production of this product is currently low, but if it is at the peak of saffron production.
When we reach, we will have a yield of 5 to 7 kg per hectare.
Regarding the reason why the province’s saffron cultivated lands do not have agricultural insurance, he said:
The insurance reason must specify what risks it insures saffron against.
Land insurance is a component of saffron cultivation against untimely and untimely rains that damage saffron flowers,
but insurance has not yet agreed to this item, although we are still seriously pursuing this issue.
