Kurdistan Province’s early saffron programme was described through 42.5 hectares, 60 growers and a 22-kilogram harvest forecast. Those figures recorded a young crop sector rather than its mature potential, and later official reporting shows why every area, rank and yield needs a date.

What the 42-hectare title refers to
Zahed Hajimirzaei, then director of horticultural affairs for the Kurdistan Agricultural Jihad Organization, said 42.5 hectares had been allocated to saffron in that crop year. The headline rounds the area to 42 hectares.
He divided the land into 23 hectares described in translation as “fertile” and 19 hectares as “infertile.” In this context, bearing and non-bearing fields are the more likely meaning. Those parts add to 42 hectares, not 42.5, so the surviving figures contain a half-hectare discrepancy that should not be silently corrected.
Sixty farmers were building a new local crop
Hajimirzaei said 60 farmers were cultivating saffron and that the number had risen each year since planting began in the province. Development was presented as a way to improve income from lower-yield land, including suitable areas around Sarvabad.
A new crop can diversify income, but low yield from the previous use does not by itself make land suitable for saffron. Drainage, soil condition, corm health, autumn water, access during harvest and a reliable buyer all have to work together.
The 22-kilogram forecast reflected young fields
The forecast for that season was 22 kilograms of dry saffron across the province. If it came from the stated 23 bearing hectares, the implied average would be just under one kilogram per hectare.
Hajimirzaei explained the low output by saying most growers were in their first years of production. Saffron can flower before year three, so “income generation from the third year onwards” should not be read as a universal biological threshold. Field age, corm size, planting density and crop care influence how quickly a planting reaches stronger production.
The five-to-seven-kilogram yield was a future target
For fields at peak production, Hajimirzaei expected five to seven kilograms per hectare. That is an agronomic expectation, not a guaranteed result for every Kurdistan farm.
A sound comparison separates total planted area from bearing area and records dry stigma weight after one defined drying method. Without those two measurements, a young field and a mature field can appear to have the same poor yield even though they are at different stages.
Dehgolan, Bijar and Sarvabad led the early distribution
In the historical account, Dehgolan had the largest saffron area at eight hectares. Bijar followed with seven hectares, and Sarvabad had more than six hectares.
That order did not remain fixed. An official October 2021 report put the provincial area at 63 hectares and identified Bijar, with eight hectares, as the largest locality. Both rankings can be accurate for their respective seasons.
Later production figures show the sector had changed
The same 2021 report said Kurdistan had produced 200 kilograms in the previous crop year and forecast 250 kilograms for the current one. It also reported an average of five to six kilograms per hectare.
These later numbers should not be merged into the 22-kilogram season as if they describe one harvest. They provide dated evidence that more fields had reached production and that the provincial programme expanded beyond the 42-hectare stage.
Planting and first irrigation need local timing
The official report placed saffron planting from early or mid-summer to mid-September and harvest from about 10 November to the end of November. It highlighted the first irrigation as especially important.
Calendar dates are a local guide, not a substitute for field conditions. Soil temperature, rainfall, corm dormancy and access to water should inform the actual schedule, and wet soil that cannot drain can create a different risk from drought.
Why agricultural insurance was unresolved
Hajimirzaei said Kurdistan’s saffron land did not yet have agricultural insurance and that the insurer needed to specify which risks it would cover. Unseasonal rain damaging flowers was the example under discussion, but agreement had not been reached.
That distinction matters. A policy must define the insured crop stage, event threshold, evidence required, exclusions, assessment method and compensation basis. “Insured against rain” is too vague when light rain, prolonged wet weather and a damaging storm have very different effects.
What rain can damage during flowering
Rain is not always harmful to saffron. The problem in the report concerned untimely rainfall during the short flowering and harvest period, when wet flowers can be harder to collect and process promptly.
Growers can reduce avoidable losses by monitoring forecasts, preparing picking teams and clean containers, and moving flowers to a protected separation and drying area quickly. Insurance, if offered, should complement those measures rather than replace them.
What a current Kurdistan assessment should record
The original 42-hectare story preserves the early geography and risks of saffron cultivation in Kurdistan Province. It identifies the growers, bearing-area problem, first production forecast, expected mature yield and the unresolved insurance question.
A current account needs a fresh total and bearing area by county, field-age distribution, measured dry output, active grower count and clear insurance terms. Keeping those measures separate allows the 42.5-hectare baseline and the later 63-hectare report to tell a useful development story without presenting either as today’s situation.
