Forecast of 70 kg of saffron harvest from farms under cultivation in Urmia
The head of the Agricultural Jihad Organization of West Azerbaijan (Urmia) announced the forecast of harvesting 70 kg of saffron from the fields under cultivation of this crop in the province.
Rasool Jalili added: In recent years, the area under cultivation of this crop in the province has increased to about 45 hectares and its yield has increased to about 5 kg per hectare.
He continued:
Last year, about 42 kilograms of saffron were harvested from the fields under cultivation of this crop, and the cities of Urmia, Miandoab, Shut, Piranshahr and Salmas have the highest area under cultivation of this crop in the province.
According to the province’s Jihad-e-Keshavarzi information base, he said that saffron is one of the most important export products of Iran, which produces and exports a significant amount of foreign currency every year.
Due to the microclimate in this province, which is very similar to the climate of South Khorasan (Birjand and Ghaen) and on the other hand due to the low need of this plant for water and irrigation during the summer, the development of cultivation of this product in the province began. And is increasing.

Saffron is one of the medicinal plants and the development of cultivation of low-water medicinal plants is also one of the priorities of the Agricultural Jihad Organization.
He added: “Saffron onions are offered every year by private companies operating in this field at the time of cultivation, and applicants who cultivate saffron on a large scale are introduced to South Khorasan province to buy and transport onions legally.” be.
