The representative of the people of Ghaen and Zirkuh in the Islamic Consultative Assembly announced the compilation of a comprehensive document on saffron in the Ministry of Jihad for Agriculture and stated: All this document should be implemented for saffron in Ghaen.

Falahati pointed out that this document shows all the issues related to saffron that should be implemented, noting: We are not against saffron cultivation in other parts of the country, but we claim quality.

Mohammad Karimi, the governor of Ghaen, also said: Planting, holding and harvesting barberry and saffron have many and desirable job opportunities with high exchange rate potential for the country.

He introduced Ghaen as the capital of the most fragrant and high quality red gold in the world and two strategic products of saffron and barberry and added: 90 to 93% of the total world production of saffron and 95% of the world production of barberry belongs to Iran.

The governor of Ghaen stated that 95% of the country’s barberry production is produced in South Khorasan, and specified: in Ghaen, 22 tons of dried saffron is produced in 5,300 hectares and 7,000 tons of dried barberry is produced in 6,200 hectares.

Emphasizing on the production of organic products and solving the challenges of processing strategic products, Karimi continued: Two valuable barberry and saffron products should be created by coordinating and developing relations between actors in the field of production, industry and export.

He added: It is necessary to allocate low-utility facilities for barberry and saffron to cooperatives and processing units at the time of harvest.

The governor of Ghaen, emphasizing the export of these products, said: The market of 500 tons of saffron and 20,000 tons of barberry with a very high value of currency without the intervention, support and management of the government can not stand and be stable.

Karimi reminded: 25,000 job opportunities with 15 processing units and three export units in Ghaen, this city has a first and privileged position in South Khorasan province.
