Increase of 12 hectares of saffron cultivation in Sistan and Baluchestan
Horticulture director of Jihad Agricultural Organization of Sistan and Baluchestan province said that saffron cultivation in the current crop year has been delayed for two weeks due to hot weather and saffron cultivation has started in the first decade of October and will continue until the end of the second decade of October.
Ardeshir Shahraki added: This year, due to the welcome of farmers, it is expected that 12 hectares will be added to the area under saffron cultivation in Sistan and Baluchestan and the area under saffron cultivation will reach 44 hectares.
He specified the required saffron onion by this management with the participation of farmers from South Khorasan and Khorasan Razavi provinces and provided it to farmers.
The official said that saffron cultivation has grown significantly in the last three years and currently the area under saffron cultivation in the province is 22 hectares, of which 9 hectares are fertile.
Shahraki stated: In the last crop year, 45 kg of saffron flowers were produced in Sistan and Baluchestan
The director of horticulture of the Jihad Agricultural Organization, referring to the low water requirement of saffron, emphasized that the main yield of saffron is from the third year onwards and it will have an economic harvest for 6 years.
He pointed out: In Sistan and Baluchestan, saffron is cultivated in Khash, Mirjaveh, Zahedan and 5 cities of Sistan.
