Medicine and Health – Athletes eat saffron

Saffron supplement has a great effect on increasing the antioxidant capacity of athletes as well as the health of normal people and reduces the risk of cancer.
Mina Akbari, a student at Tehran Azad University, whose article was introduced as a top article at the first student conference on sports immunology, said: Based on research conducted by athletes, we found that saffron supplementation reduces the oxidative pressure of these people. Its antioxidant properties improve their performance in short and long term activities and play an important role in the health of these athletes who have high volume and intensity of training.
He added: The activities that people do, even if in small amounts, increase oxygen consumption and according to the volume and intensity of these activities, the body’s metabolism increases. These activities produce a series of reactive oxygen species called free radicals. Free radicals are actually molecules that have tremendous energy and if this energy is not controlled, they will damage and destroy the cell membrane. These radicals are also the cause of many cancers in normal people and athletes, which increase their destructive percentage with increasing intensity of training and increasing oxygen consumption.
Akbari pointed to the effect of saffron on the control of free radicals and said: Substances such as saffron, tomatoes and vitamin C, which contain pigments that have specific properties of these substances, act as a non-enzymatic reactant and have an antioxidant role. These substances with their antioxidant properties reduce the effect of free radicals in the body and reduce the amount of oxidative pressure and protect the body’s cells. These substances control the destructive effect of electrons that they release into free radicals and prevent the development of many cancerous masses in people.
Emphasizing the role of free radicals in the development of various types of cancer, he said: It is recommended for athletes who have high volume and intensity of training, especially semi-endurance runners, as well as ordinary people who are inactive and those who are middle-aged to old. Use saffron and other non-enzymatic substances that reduce the oxidative effect and increase the body’s resistance to high oxygen consumption. The research was conducted over a wide period of time and the performance of athletes was measured both in the short and long term and the effect of saffron supplementation on the antioxidant capacity of track and field athletes was positive.
It is worth mentioning that Mina Akbari, a graduate student of Azad University, entitled Short-term and long-term effect of saffron supplement on the antioxidant capacity of semi-endurance trained runners was presented at the first student conference on sports immunology at Tarbiat Modares University.
