According to the report of the Birjand Journalists’ Club, vice chairman of the National Council of Saffron, Birjand reporters said that now more than 24,500 farmers are operating to produce saffron in southern Khorasan, where 85% of their saffron production goes to European countries and the Gulf And adjacent provinces.
Ehtesham added: “The cultivated area of this product in South Khorasan is more than 10 thousand hectares with an annual production of about 50 tons, which ranked first in quality and the second in terms of production of this product in the country.
He announced a 19 percent increase in exports of saffron in the country during the first three months of this year, adding that the removal of export duties for saffron for packages above 30 grams would increase the export of Iranian saffron by 19 percent in the first three months of this year.
He stated that saffron cultivation in the country is 85,000 square meters, adding that 250 tons of saffron are produced annually, while the export volume of saffron is less than its production.
He said 232 tons of saffron were produced in Iran last year, of which 137 were exported to Arab and European countries.
Vice President of the Saffron National Council, pointing out that the council has been pursuing a national brand name for saffron, added: This week saw the registration of saffron genetics and its geographic registration.
Ehtesham also noted: South Khorasan was among the first provinces to develop the brand of barberry and saffron, but no budget has been allocated for this brand.
