Reduction of saffron production due to rain and frost
Following rain and frost in the saffron-rich areas of Khorasan Razavi and South Khorasan provinces, a number of saffron flowers
have been destroyed and the harvest of this product has decreased by 20%.
Ali Hosseini – Member of the National Saffron Council said:
it was predicted that 300 tons of saffron would be harvested from the country’s farms this year, but due to rain and frost,
production will decrease by about 20%, which will not be less than last year.
According to him, 240 to 270 tons of saffron will be harvested from about 80,000 hectares of this crop farm this year.
Hosseini stated:
In some mountainous areas, including Kashmar, saffron flowers have been destroyed due to frost,
and the flowers of one day have been damaged in these fields.
This member of the National Saffron Council announced:
Rainfall has also damaged saffron crops and the recent rains in all saffron-rich areas of Khorasan Razavi and South Khorasan provinces
have caused a lot of crop loss.
He added:
Rainfall causes a severe decline in quality because rain-soaked saffron loses its quality.
On the other hand, many flowers die after rain and it is very difficult to separate the remaining flowers.
Hosseini named the cities of Tarbiat Heydariyeh, Kashmar and Bardaskan as the main areas affected by saffron following the recent rains.
