Saffron cultivation in Mehriz city was expanded to 48 hectares
Director of Mehriz Agricultural Jihad said: the area under saffron cultivation in the region increased to 48 hectares due to the welcome of farmers and the follow-up of this management, which has an important role in the jump in production and employment.
Mohammad Jafari added: The area under saffron cultivation in the region last year was only 40 hectares and the increase in its cultivation in the current crop year due to weather conditions caused the prosperity of agriculture in the region.
He pointed to the advantages of cultivating this crop and reminded: saffron cultivation has many benefits that due to the water crisis and employment and optimal change of cultivation pattern, has a fundamental and constructive role in achieving the region’s economy, especially the resistance economy and increasing production.
The official said: Low water demand, low production costs, maintenance and high prices, this product provides employment and income for producers and the government does not spare any help to develop it in the city and we hope it will increase every year.
The saffron harvest began on 48 hectares of agricultural lands in the city, which is expected to increase by 10% compared to the same period last year due to the favorable weather conditions.
It is predicted that about three kilograms of high quality saffron will be harvested in the region this year. In addition to consumption in the city, most of it will be sold in Yazd.
About 300 families are planting, holding and harvesting this plant in Mehriz.
