1. Rodent Damage
saffron pest and disease management
In saffron fields, some pests, like rodents, can cause significant damage to the plants. Rabbits and rats are responsible for damaging saffron. To protect the crops from such damage, various measures should be taken.
Rabbits:
During the winter, rabbits feed on the green saffron shoots. Measures such as trapping, fencing the land, using poisoned bait (such as phosphorous-dosed wheat at a rate of 2.5%), or repellent substances like Arbin can help prevent further damage.
Rats:
Similar to rabbits, rats feed on saffron leaves and, especially, the bulbs. To control rats, one can use fumigation tablets in the burrows, or poisoned baits in their nests. A traditional method of dealing with rats is by placing one end of a plastic tube into the rat burrows and connecting the other end to a motorcycle exhaust, then turning on the engine to release toxic smoke into the rat tunnels. Another method is planting mint around saffron fields to deter rats.
Hedgehogs:
Hedgehogs also favor saffron plants, and they dig up and eat the bulbs, leaving only their shells behind. Trapping is one way to control the population of hedgehogs. Another method is to wrap a cotton cloth around a stick, soak it with chloropicrin, and place it in the hedgehog’s burrow to release toxic gas and kill the animal. However, all burrow entrances must be sealed to ensure the gas remains inside, preventing the animal from escaping.
2. Saffron Bulb Mite (bulb mite):
This type of pest is oval-shaped, dark, and has short, strong, and bristly legs. It commonly targets crops such as potatoes, carrots, and onions. This mite attacks the bulbs, causing wounds on the bulb surface. Affected bulbs develop blackened, decayed areas. When the plant is infested, the flowers appear smaller and weaker, with weakened styles. Mite infestations have been reported in saffron fields in Gonabad, Qaen, and South Khorasan.
Prevention Methods:
- Ensure planting depth is 15-20 cm.
- Only plant healthy, unblemished bulbs.
- Disinfect the bulbs with fungicides and mite-control treatments before planting.
- Every 2 years, re-fill the soil to maintain consistent bulb depth.
- Limit the length of time saffron is cultivated on a site to reduce pest accumulation.
- Avoid transferring infected bulbs to other fields.
3. Thrips Damage:
This pest is yellow to light brown, with narrow, pointed wings and long fringed edges. The pests damage the leaves by inserting their jaws, leaving yellow or white spots. Affected saffron plants experience early leaf drop, resulting in diminished quality and quantity of saffron flowers. Thrips are mainly a concern late in the growing season, after the saffron flowers have been harvested. This doesn’t typically require chemical intervention.
4. Saffron Bulbworm:
This pest is known to cause significant damage to saffron by attacking the bulbs underground. The larvae are white and damage the plants by feeding on the bulbs, causing wilting, yellowing, and drying of the leaves. To control this pest, an application of the insecticide “Swin” may be used.
Saffron Diseases
1. Saffron Wilt Disease:
This fungal disease, caused by *Rhizoctonia* and *Ulocladium* species, affects the bulbs, initially producing dark spots on the bulb’s surface. As the disease progresses, it affects the plant’s vascular system, leading to a collapse of the plant and wilting of leaves.
Control Methods for Wilt Disease:
- Remove and burn all infected bulbs and leaves.
- Disinfect bulbs before planting with suitable fungicides.
- Avoid planting saffron in the same field for 6 to 8 years after an infection.
2. Saffron Smut Disease:
This disease is caused by the fungus *Fumago* and affects the leaves of saffron plants. It initially causes light yellow to white spots that eventually darken. The disease spreads to the bulbs, resulting in their decay. Saffron plants afflicted with this disease will often exhibit distorted and stunted flowers.
Control Methods for Smut Disease:
- Remove and dispose of affected leaves.
- Pre-plant disinfect bulbs with appropriate fungicides.
