The director of Gonabad Agricultural Jihad said: Although Gonabad has a 700-year history in saffron cultivation, the lack of scientific and industrial perspective and climate change has hindered the qualitative development of saffron cultivation in this city.
Alireza Hosseinzadeh stated: “Currently, about 7,000 households and agricultural operators are active in the saffron sector. Also, the permanent employment created during the year is one thousand people, and many of the hidden income in the agricultural sector goes to farmers.”
He continued: Although the price of saffron decreased a lot this year and it was expected that the price would decrease again with the start of the harvest season, but with the timely arrival of the government and the start of supportive purchase, the price of saffron increased and the price was sharply reduced.

The director of Gonabad Agricultural Jihad also said: “Although Gonabad has a 700-year history of saffron cultivation, it is not possible to increase the area under cultivation, so it remains at the same 3,500 hectares, but we are trying with training classes in We are holding the field of nutrition and farm management, etc., to increase the performance in the unit level.
He pointed out that now the yield per unit area is 4 to 4.5 kilos, he said: Currently, the collection and cleaning of saffron in Gonabad city is done traditionally.
Hosseinzadeh added: “Although the weather conditions this year were unfavorable and we had heavy rain and cold, but the people came to the aid of the farmers and collected the flowers.”
He said: “The people of Gonabad even cleared a large number of flowers from the cities of Zaveh, Torbat-e-Jameh, Taybad and Torbat-e-Heydariyeh. In fact, if the people did not help, the farmers would suffer a lot of damage.”
In Gonabad city, 3,500 hectares of saffron fields are expected to harvest 12 tons of dried saffron, which will be the result of 1,000 tons of flowers.
