The effectiveness of saffron in the treatment of brain disorders
A member of the Medicinal Plants Research Center of Yazd University of Medical Sciences said: Saffron is effective in treating brain disorders caused by aging such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Dr. Ali Babaei stated the following: The effect of saffron has been proven in modern studies and its consumption in these cases is very widespread and approved by scientific authorities.
He added: Saffron is a herbaceous plant, perennial, without stems and bulbs. Saffron onion is a solid and almost spherical type with a diameter of three to five centimeters and a brown coating that is placed under the soil. Each onion produces six to nine slender leaves, like the leaves of grass.
Babaei pointed out: The roots of saffron are of the spray type, which grow from the base of the onion and from its circumferential circle. Saffron flower is the first organ to appear in early autumn. In the first year of cultivation, due to the weakness of saffron bulbs and their lack of complete establishment in soil and deep cultivation, saffron flower buds are not strong enough to grow and even the leaves appear later than usual in the first year.
Referring to the medicinal organs of saffron, he said: The part used by the saffron plant is its orange stigma, the color of its flowers.
A member of the Medicinal Plants Research Center of Yazd University of Medical Sciences, referring to the scope of this plant, added: Saffron is widely grown in the eastern regions of Khorasan province, especially South Khorasan; Its planting is also common in other parts of the country.
Referring to the healing properties of saffron, Babaei said: Saffron is hot and dry according to ancient Iranian medicine. The most important property of saffron, which has been used since ancient times, is the treatment of depression.
He emphasized that saffron has a strong smell and bitter taste: eating saffron tea causes digestion.
Associate Professor of Pharmacology, Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, Yazd, referring to the pain-relieving and regularizing effect of saffron, said: Saffron stimulates the nerves and, on the other hand, is blood-forming and facilitates blood circulation.
Babaei continued: Saffron is biliary and appetizing, relieves stomach pain and is antispasmodic. It also relieves renal colic pain, relieves cough and has a beneficial effect on the treatment of bronchitis.
A member of the Medicinal Plants Research Center of Yazd University of Medical Sciences added: Saffron is anticonvulsant and reduces blood cholesterol and blood pressure.
The results of new pharmacological studies show that saffron extract has the effects of reducing fat, increasing learning and memory, purifying the blood, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, purifying the spleen and liver, and initiating the growth of the genitals.
The faculty member of Yazd University of Medical Sciences emphasized: Although the amount of saffron that is usually added to food as a flavoring and coloring is not able to cause abortion, but at the same time it is recommended during pregnancy from Avoid eating saffron in any way.
The lethal amount of saffron is about 20 grams, he said. Consuming large amounts of saffron in normal people can also be dangerous.
Babaei, stating that saffron, in particular, has a joyful, funny and anti-depressant effect, added: Saffron is also used in the treatment of nerve pain and due to its sedative effect for the treatment of insomnia.
Saffron boosts memory, he said. This nutrient is especially effective in treating aging-related brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
